Hydroacoustic Monitoring of Seafloor Spreading and Transform Faulting in the Equatorial Atlantic Ocean

چکیده
Seismicity along mid-ocean ridges and oceanic transform faults provides insights into the processes of crustal accretion strike-slip deformation. In equatorial Atlantic ocean, slow-spreading Mid-Atlantic Ridge is offset by some longest-offset on Earth, which remain relatively poorly understood due to its remote location far from land-based teleseismic receivers. A catalog T-phase events detected an array ten autonomous hydrophones deployed between 2011 2015, extending 20°N 10°S presented. The final 6843 has a magnitude completeness 3.3, compared 4.4 for International Seismic Center covering same region, allows investigation dual fault slip. seismicity rate observed at asymmetric spreading segments (those hosting detachment faults) significantly higher than that symmetric centers, 74% known hydrothermal vents occur segments. Aseismic patches are present nearly all faults, including Romanche where regional rotation transpression could explain both bathymetric uplift reduction in seismic activity. patterns provide insight thermal mechanical structure ridge axis associated potentially method investigating distribution vent systems.

Seafloor Asymmetry in the Atlantic Ocean
Measurements of seafloor asymmetry at about 360000 pairs of conjugate points along 1250 profiles across the midAtlantic Ridge (MAR) provide new constraints on models for the upwelling of the buoyant asthenosphere. The sign and amplitude of the asymmetry vary systematically and are functions of the distance between the spreading center and the location of the inferred location of maximum regiona...

متن کاملOn the Seasonal Cycle of the Equatorial Atlantic Ocean
Although the seasonal cycle of the equatorial Atlantic and Pacific Oceans have many similarities, for example, an annual signal is dominant at the equator even though the sun ‘‘crosses’’ the equator twice a year, different processes determine the seasonal cycles of the two oceans and in the Atlantic different processes are important in the east and west. In the Gulf of Guinea in the eastern equ...
متن کاملSeasonal cycle in the upper equatorial Atlantic Ocean
[1] The dynamics of the seasonal cycle in the upper equatorial Atlantic ocean are studied using observations and a hierarchy of ocean models. Distinctive features of the seasonal cycle are strong annual and semiannual components: eastward (westward) propagating sea surface height (SSH) and thermocline depth at the equator (off the equator) and westward propagating surface zonal currents at the ...
متن کاملEquatorial upwelling enhances nitrogen fixation in the Atlantic Ocean
[1] Surface waters in upwelling regions are thought to be nutrient rich and hence inhibit nitrogen fixation (diazotrophy) because diazotrophs can preferentially assimilate nitrate and ammonia instead of expending energy to fix dinitrogen. We found average nitrogen fixation rates to be two to seven times higher in the surface waters of the upwelling region of the eastern equatorial Atlantic than...
